Humulin
Class:
Hormone (hypoglycemic agent).
Actions:
Causes uptake of glucose by the cells, decreases blood glucose level, promotes
glucose storage.
Indications:
Elevated blood glucose, diabetic ketoacidosis.
Contraindications:
Avoid overcompensation of blood glucose level; if possible, administration
should wait until the patient is in the emergency department.
Precautions:
Administration of excessive dose may induce hypoglycemia. Glucose should be
available.
Side Effects:
Few in emergency situations.
Dosage:
10-25 units regular insulin IV followed by an infusion at 0.1 units/kg/hr.
Routes:
IV subQ.
Pediatric Dosage:
Dosage is based on blood glucose level.
